Getting Started
No, FetchNote does not require you to install software because it is entirely web-based. If your computer or mobile device has a web browser (such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox), then you can use FetchNote to create summaries of your PDF annotations. You may need to install annotation software (such as
Adobe Acrobat) to add digital notes to your PDF files.
- There are narrated tutorial videos with step-by-step instructions on how to use FetchNote. For best results, determine the type of document you have annotated before watching a tutorial video.
- There is a brief guide on using some of FetchNote’s features.
- There is a large selection of example PDF files that have already been annotated and summarized.
- An explanation for each FetchNote setting is available by clicking on the setting name.

AI Information
Tokens are a way to measure how much text is submitted to an AI language model for processing. One to two sentences of text is roughly equivalent to 30 tokens. The more text contained in your PDF, the greater the computational cost for the AI model to process that information. Please
click here for a more in-depth explanation of AI tokens.
It depends on the type of AI model you use and the total amount of text submitted. When using the GPT-3.5 Turbo AI model and your PDF is 100 pages long with about 200 words per page, then the total cost would be roughly 50K tokens. Likewise, if your PDF is only 25 pages long but has 800 words per page, then the total cost would also be roughly 50K tokens. However, when using GPT-4 the total cost is 10 times more than GPT-3.5 Turbo. For example, the PDF that was 25 pages long with about 800 words per page, the total cost would be roughly 500K tokens instead of 50K tokens when using GPT-4.
No, if you highlighted or annotated your PDF yourself, then you do not need to use FetchNote’s AI assist feature. If you have not yet highlighted your PDF and you would like to find particular topics in your PDF, then you can use AI assist to potentially highlight those regions of your PDF for you. FetchNote will then generate a summary document of the AI highlights as well as your own highlights if any exist.
No, if you use FetchNote’s AI assist feature then the app will communicate with
Microsoft Azure OpenAI large language model to help locate relevant regions of text within your PDF. Then FetchNote will use OpenAI’s responses to automatically highlight regions of your PDF that contain text relevant to your requested topics of interest. We cannot guarantee that OpenAI will always respond with the correct location of text that is relevant to your requested topics.
Yes, FetchNote can request Azure OpenAI to paraphrase relevant text rather than specify the location of relevant text. FetchNote will then add OpenAI’s responses as textbox annotations to subsections of your PDF document. IMPORTANT: when using this option, it is critical that you review the accuracy of OpenAI’s responses in case AI paraphrased your text incorrectly!
